From humble beginnings as an installation company, The Perfect Lawn Inc. was created to address a water crisis in Colorado. The inspiration for the company came while I was watching a local news station reporting on a severe drought. Water restrictions were imposed restricting all outdoor watering, leaving thousands of residential homeowners and commercial properties with dead grass. As a result some people began painting their lawns with green paint which obviously created several environmental concerns. While watching the news story on TV I knew there had to be a better way to have a green lawn.
After doing extensive research on the nationwide drought I learned that some cities in New Mexico and Arizona were installing artificial grass. At the time these products were not aesthetically appealing but they did help resolve the concerns regarding water usage. As a bonus, the cost of maintenance was significantly reduced. Through continued research I learned that nationwide irrigation for lawns consumed billions of gallons every day. I also learned that billions of dollars are spent each year to maintain grass.
Two weeks after watching the news story I pursued creating a synthetic grass installation company. With the help of a friend and a local landscaper we completed our first installation. We encountered many issues regarding product quality, consistency and availability. During one of our installations I realized that I could create a better product and make it available to landscapers nationwide. I decided it was time for me to create my own brand of artificial grass. Six months later, with a significant investment in time and money, The Perfect Lawn, Inc. ventured into creating its own unique products.
After nearly two years of calling landscapers and sending out thousands of samples the company was becoming well established. However, there were many challenges and some landscapers would not give me the time of day. I was unwavering in my belief that artificial grass provided an excellent alternative to natural grass and that it is truly an environmentally friendly product.
There have been notable changes over the years in the artificial grass industry; we continued to improve our products and sales increased. Despite all the changes, we always maintained our commitment to quality and customer service. As the market continues to grow many companies have emerged to install artificial grass which provides opportunities for new business owners and creates jobs in the areas where they do business.
Over the years our company and the artificial grass industry have continued to grow. Many of our competitors who manufacture turf have merged or have been acquired by private equity groups. Some companies have been acquired by subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway. I believe these mergers and acquisitions speak to the success and projected growth of this industry. We have decided to remain independent in order to maintain the close relationship we have with all of our customers and to ensure the quality of our products. Although we have a select group of private investors we have maintained control of our company and continue to lead it in the right direction.
As we continue to make improvements and expand into new markets both domestically and abroad, we will always endeavor to ensure that our customers are provided with the highest quality products that are environmentally friendly and create the best value. One significant change is that we will be selling our artificial grass directly to residential customers. After 10 years of successfully helping people around the world reduce their water consumption our business has began to take on a deeper purpose. The drought in the US has received an unprecedented amount of media coverage and for good reason. More than half the country is experiencing drought and last year was the hottest year in recorded history. Our product significantly reduces water consumption which is clearly beneficial, but I felt our company could do more.
I became inspired byTOMSOne for One program where a pair of shoes is provided to a child in need for every pair of shoes purchased. This year we will begin a similar program. For every square foot of artificial grass purchased we will provide 25 gallons of clean water to a developing nation. In the US over 5,000,000,000 (5 Billion) gallons of water are used for watering lawns everyday. Worldwide over 5,000 people a day die from dehydration and unsafe water. 90% of these deaths are children under 5 years old. Together we can save water and save lives.
